I was doing the brakes on my miata, and turns out the rear passenger caliper is fucked. Dust boot ripped, piston won’t retract. The pads on that side we’re worn completely down, and the other side had decent life left. So, I can get Advance auto to get me ones tomorrow for $80 per, or Mazda on Tuesday for $120. Is refurbs through advance a bad idea, or worth saving$80?

The refurbs on my NB1 started leaking again in about 6 months. I would wait or rebuild them yourself. I used the OEM Mazda kit and they were fine.
Moss Miata I think used to have new calipers pretty cheap. Maybe it was another Miata site. cannot remember

I got refurbs for the rears on my Miata two years ago and have had no problems, for whatever that’s worth to you.

Depends on the warranty Advanced offers. Personally, I’d go with the Mazda calipers.

O’Reilly is my go-to, and they have calipers with lifetime warranties. Surely Advance does as well. Can’t go wrong with that.

Not a miata, but I rebuilt the calipers on my e38 for pennies compared to replacing them. Wasn’t difficult either.
That said, if your pistons are oxidized, bubbling, and out of round, and thats what is causing them to fail to retract, you’re probably better off swapping them out.

Whichever one is the correct brake caliper. I’ve seen parts stores AND dealerships screw it up and sell the standard 1.8 caliper for Miatas with the larger brakes. One of my former ES rivals took his in for replacement and he ended up with sports in the front and standards in the rear.

I’d just get the refurbs from advance. I’ve gotten refurbs from other places like O’Reillys and never had issues. My understanding is that replacing the seals and re-surfacing the piston and bore will make the caliper as good as new (which they do with refurbs). So I wouldn’t pay the money for brand new ones.
